Visitation Monastery & Retreat House

On Saturday, June 2 the Camera South camera club was given behind the scenes access to the Visitation Monastery and Retreat House located on Springhill Avenue.

The Visitation Nuns are a contemplative religious order dedicated to a life of prayer.

Although to some what lies behind the wall at 2300 Springhill Avenue may seem a mystery, to many there is a rich history, years of loving service and the power of prayer exemplified.  On December 31, 1832, the founding Sisters of the Visitation arrived in Mobile from Georgetown at the invitation of Bishop Michael Portier, the first Bishop of Mobile, to open a convent and school.  A modest little rented house with two large rooms, three small rooms and a kitchen in the yard, served as the Sister's first home.

The current Visitation Monastery is a landmark in our community.  The building is both historic and beautiful.  Built in 1854, it serves as home for the Visitation Nuns and a place for retreats and spiritual renewal.
